Comparison and Contrast



Comparison and contrast is a method of identifying of similarities and differences between two things. Comparison and Contrast is usually used as an essay assignment strategy, but it is a  strategy that helps you make important decisions.

Types of Comparison

·       Positive degree

comparison which states a positive statement without changing anything

§  As (Adjective) As 

§  As (adverb) as

§  The same as

§  The same (noun) as

§  Be + Like

·       Comparative degree

Comparison which is use more/-er and -than to compare two things

Example :

§  Mahameru is higher than Merapi

§  Today I feel happier than yesterday

§  I have more comfortable shoes than your

·       Superlative degree

Comparison which is use -most or -est/iest to compare three or more things

Example :

§  He is the oldest of all four brother

§  She is the luckiest person I know

§  The most beautiful moment in life is with you

 

Types of Contrast

1. Point by point contrast

The reader will relate to the features of the two subjects then state the contrast by discussing point by point

 

2. Subject by Subject

Here the reader will discuss with the first object then move to another object and so on

Examples :

§  I really enjoyed that movie. However, I prefer the book

§  I want to go the party, but I am so tired

§  Unlike you, I am not a great dancer

 

Structure/ How to Organize

There are 2 main ways to structure a compare and contrast essay. First, Block and second is point-by-point.

1.     Block

For  block structures, all  information about one of the objects to be compared / contrasted is listed first, then all  information about the other object is listed afterwards, this structure used for cause and effect and problem solution essays.

2.     Point by point

Each similarity/difference for one object is followed immediately by the similarity/difference for the other.

3.     Venn Diagram

Venn diagram is a diagram in the form of a circle which is a visual tool to compare and contrast two or more objects or concepts that have similiarities and differences. The several function of the venn diagram are visualize information for a compare and contrast, brainstorm ideas when writing story, help make decisions. How to make venn diagram?

·       Draw two circles that are tangent to each other

·       Each circle fill in several general statements of an item without hitting yhe area of the tangent of the two circles

·       The first circle is filled with item 1 statements and the second circles is filled with item 2 statements

·       Right in the area where the two circles intersect, fill in the statements that are the same from both of them

Function of compare and contrast

            1. Functions of compare

1.     To find the difference between two or more things.

2.     To express similarities or comparisons between two objects.

            2. Functions of contrast

                        1. Clarify something unknown and or not well understood

                        2. Lead to the fresh insight or new way of viewing something.

                        3. Bring one or both of the subject into sharper focus

                        4. Show the one object better than the other
