Narrative text


Narrative text is a story that is not real. This story is made up and exaggerated by the author. Narrative text aims to entertain the reader and give a moral message or there is an implied message that the author wants to convey to the reader

Characteristic of narrative text

1.      Use the action verb in past tense

2.      Use certain noun for personal pronouns

3.      Use the adjective that made up the noun phrase

4.      Use conjunction to order events

Structure of narrative text

1.      Orientation

Orientation contains an introduction to the characters in the story, setting the time and place in the story

2.      Complication

Complications are the part of the story where problems start to appear until they are at the peak of the problem. This part involves the main character in the story

3.      Resolution

The resolution is the final part of the story where the solution to the problem in the story begins to be found. How the problem can solved and story has a happy ending or instead

4.      Re-orientation

This section usually contains the conclusion of the story and also a moral message for the reader. Sometimes the author also gives an implied message at the end of the story. But there is also a narrative text that has no re-orientation

Narrative features

1.      Language

Narrative text use the descriptive and figurative language which easy for the audience to understand

2.      Perspective

Narrative text can be written by anyone’s perspective. But what is often used is the third person perspective

3.      Dialogue

In narrative text, use narration from author and direct sentences that begin with a colon for first person conversation

4.      Tense

Narrative text mostly uses the past tense, but if there is a conversation, it can be combined with other tenses

Example of narrative text

  Snow White

Orientation:

Once upon a time there lived a little girl named Snow White. She lived with her Aunt and Uncle because her parents were dead

Complication:

One day she heard her Uncle and Aunt talking about leaving Snow White in the castle because they both wanted to go to America and they didn’t have enough money to take Snow White. Snow White did not want her Uncle and Aunt to do this so she decided it would be best if she ran away. The next morning she ran away from home when her Aunt and Uncle were having breakfast. She ran away into the woods.

Resolution:

Then she saw this little cottage. She knocked but no one answered so she went inside and fell asleep. Meanwhile, the seven dwarfs were coming home from work. They went inside. There they found Snow White sleeping. Then Snow White woke up. She saw the dwarfs. The dwarfs said, “what is your name?” Snow White said, “My name is Snow White.” Doc, one of the dwarfs, said, “If you wish, you may live here with us.” Snow White said, “Oh could I? Thank you.” Then Snow White told the dwarfs the whole story and finally Snow White and the 7 dwarfs lived happily ever after
