Reading
Reading is an activity to find information in the news or text. There are so many media that we can use to read such as newspaper, novels, comics, text on smartphone or television etc. Reading can be done aloud or I can be done silently (in the heart). When we read, our brain respond and processes the meaning of text we read. After that, we can convey it through or mouths.
The reading process divide in 3 stage :
· Pre-reading
The reader must know about the background and purpose of reading the text. Readers can make list of what comes to mind when read the tittle of the text or we usually call it brainstorming
· During reading
While reading, we usually make prediction about the content of the text and revise or reconfirm our prediction. Reader will rewrite the contents of the text on the one hand and the other hand there is a reaction from us.
· After reading
After the reader has read the entire text, the reader can make summary or conclusion from the text and do a retelling story, compare it with other texts or conduct question and answer from the text.
How to improve reading skills
We need reading techniques so that we can achieve reading goals quickly and effectively. Besides that we can improve our reading ability. There are several ways to improve reading skills
1. > Intensive reading
2. > Extensive reading
3. > Skimming
4. > Scanning
Reading comprehension
The ability to read in understanding the text, processing words from the text, and integrating it with the reader’s knowledge of the text. This reading ability is influenced by the reader’s ability to find or get information from a text. There are 6 types of reading comprehension
1. > Lexical comprehension
After the readers read all the text, the teacher will ask if there are difficult words or new words that reader hasn’t understood, then the teacher will explain them with give the readers synonym of the words.
2. > Literal comprehension
The reader will learn to recognize the concept of the text and understand the meaning of the text’s content. This literal comprehension is the basic of reading comprehension. This type of comprehension can be done by skimming reading techniques
3. >Interpretive comprehension
The ability of the reader to generate an idea that isn’t directly in the text. Readers can also give different opinions to the author of the text. This type usually uses question like ‘what if’, ‘how’ and ‘why’
4. >Applied comprehension
With the help of the teacher to apply in real life what is in the text such as the home environment, the reader can get an understanding of the text from his experience as to what value can be obtained. Examples of this type of question include :
o What is your opinion based on the text?
o Do you agree or disagree with the text?
5. Affective comprehension
The reader can understand and follow the storyline, how the characters in the story start to enter the story and how the emotions get in the story
6. Effective comprehension
Effective comprehension lesson help students become independent, strategic and metacognitive readers who can develop, control, and apply a variety of comprehension strategies to ensure that they understand what they have read. To achieve this goal, comprehension lesson and should start as soon as student start reading.
Conslusion
Because reading is an activity that we often do and is very important in real life, we must be able to quickly understand the sentences in a reading. There are many ways and understanding to improve our reading ability.
